Ingvar Kamprad, the billionaire founder of Swedish furniture retailer Ikea, has promised to donate more than €1 billion to charity.

He has instructed the Ikea Foundation, which has owned Kamprad’s family business since 1982, to increase its charitable spending substantially, reports say.

With philanthropy in the UK at its lowest level since the beginning of the financial crisis, the latest survey by JP Morgan Private Bank on ultra-high net worth individuals’ charitable habits hasn’t given much to cheer about.

With philanthropy in the UK at its lowest level since the beginning of the financial crisis, the latest survey by JP Morgan Private Bank on ultra-high net worth individuals’ charitable habits hasn’t given much to cheer about.

The survey, which questioned around 100 UK-based UHNW clients of the bank, revealed that around half of them give over 5% of their wealth to charity, while three-quarters give regularly to charitable causes.

Wallace McCain, co-founder of Canadian frozen food empire McCain Foods and chairman of Maple Leaf Foods, died on 13 May aged 81.

Wallace McCain, co-founder of Canadian frozen food empire McCain Foods and chairman of Maple Leaf Foods, died on 13 May aged 81.

McCain died after a long battle with cancer and is survived by his wife, four children and nine grandchildren.

McCain founded the eponymous family business along with his brother Harrison in New Brunswick, Canada in 1956. In its first year, the company had sales of around $150,000, and in the 1960s it started offering its frozen potato products to consumers outside Canada.

The latest budget provided many talking points for both personal and business finance, from the cut in corporation tax to the 1p reduction in petrol duty and the introduction of enterprise zones – all intended to stimulate growth. But in the area of charitable giving, UK chancellor George Osborne’s budget took steps to “encourage wealthy people in our society to give more.”
