Family life is extremely private in the Gulf. In a way, it is not surprising that people who dress so conservatively, with women shrouded in black and men cloaked in white, should be so guarded in showing a public face. In the same way, family businesses in the Gulf Cooperation Council, which make up the vast majority of the successful corporations there, are curiously reluctant to share their successes with the press. For this reason, the willingness of Mishal Kanoo, deputy chairman of the GCC-based Kanoo Group, to speak to CampdenFB, is all the more remarkable.

With Artsper we form partnerships with galleries across France and we are starting to develop into Europe. We ask them to get involved in Artsper [an online marketplace where galleries can display artworks for sale from their exhibitions], and after creating their account they can manage it by themselves. We do not have our own artists or artworks, so we don’t have any stock or delivery issues, we are just an intermediary between galleries, buyers and art amateurs.

The Bargetto Winery, one of California’s oldest vineyards, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. CampdenFB speaks to fourth-gen John Bargetto.

It was over a century ago that 17-year-old Philip Bargetto first came to California from the village of Castelnuovo Don Bosco, in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. “My family has been in the wine business here in this country since 1890,” says John Bargetto (pictured, left), the fourth-generation of the family and director of winemaking at the eponymous business. In 1909 Philip’s brother John joined him in California and they set up a winery in San Francisco. “They operated that for about 10 years and then prohibition came in 1919.”
