Billionaire Sumner Redstone will make it difficult for his heirs to sell off media giants CBS and Redstone following his death.

The Redstone family’s National Amusements media group holds 79.8% of Viacom’s voting stock (about 10% of the equity) and 79.5% of the voting stock and 2.4% of the Class B stock of CBS Corporation (9.1% of the equity).

The court ruled in favour of Lee Kun-hee, Samsung's second-generation chairman in three cases brought against him by five of his relatives, allowing Lee to hold on to $3.7 billion (€2.7 billion) worth of company shares that the plaintiffs had tried to obtain.

The grandson of company founder Lee Byung-chull and the only son of current chairman Lee Kun-hee, Jae-yong was already chief operating officer and president at the Suwon-based family business, which he joined in 1991.

Investors in two of South Korea’s largest family-owned conglomerates are likely reaping big rewards, thanks to shares in Samsung and Hyundai reaching record values this weekend.

According to Yonhap News Agency, stock held by Lee Kun-hee and his family in Samsung Group rose to around 13 trillion won (€8.61 billion) on Sunday (25 March).

Citing data by Cheabol.com, the report said share value was up by 25.4% compared to last year, largely due to a “bullish stock market”.

His sister Lee Boo-jin has also been promoted to president of Samsung Everland, chief executive of Hotel Shilla and advisor to Samsung C&T. Both announcements signal a step forward in the 68-year-old Lee’s succession plan.

The family patriarch was given a three year suspended prison sentence in July 2008 after being found guilty of tax evasion.
