Throughout the history of the motorcar there is a select group of family names which have themselves become iconic automobile brands, Ford, Morgan, Daimler, Packard and Renault. But one name alone can claim to represent not only the earliest innovations and technical brilliance in the field, but also our contemporary view of the peak of luxuriousness and automotive splendour. That name is Maybach.

Sivan Talmor’s musical career began early. “At the age of nine I told my mother that I wanted to be a singer, and she took me to the local music school. They said that I was too young, but they let me audition anyway and said that my voice was mature enough, so I got in.”

It was the start of an unusual journey for the granddaughter of the man who set up Iscar, an Israeli tool-making firm founded in 1952 which is famous as the first non-US business that Warren Buffett invested in; he bought an 80% stake in 2006 for $4 billion (€3.1 billion).

In her new store in a prime corner location on the Upper East Side, Mathilde Thomas is lining up bottles of Caudalie skincare products with the precision of a chemist. A digital display shows the view from her bedroom at her family’s vineyard, Château Smith Haut Lafitte, with leaves rippling in the breeze. The central counter is made from wine barrels and the wallpaper is decorated with pictures of the varieties of grapes the family grows.
