UK billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben have won a tender for Banco Santander’s headquarters near Madrid with an offer of $325 million after a Spanish court ruled in their favour.

The privately-owned Reuben Brothers Resources Group beat a rival bid by Santander, which pays millions of euros in monthly rent for the 250 hectare plot whose nine buildings include offices, restaurants and a residence for its employees.

Asia’s narrow promotion to second place came despite a 10% rise in 2017 in the number of ultra-wealthy Europeans (with $50 million or more), taking Europe’s number of wealth-holders to 35,180. Asia’s ultra-wealthy population accelerated 15% to 35,880 wealth-holders, according to Wealth-X data which informed the new Knight Frank Wealth Report.

The new Wealth-X Billionaire Census reported that billionaires whose wealth was inherited comprised only 13% of all global billionaires and 14% of total billionaire wealth.

More than 800 individuals have become billionaires since the financial markets bottomed out in March 2009 following the global financial crisis, with today’s total population at 2,170.

According to the Billionaire Census 2013, released by Wealth-X and UBS, Asia is the fastest growing region for individuals whose worth is at least 10 figures long.

Since last year, the region’s billionaire population rose 3.7%, with 18 new individuals, and total billionaire wealth increased 13%.

Figures from research company Wealth-X show Perth is currently home to the fourth-highest concentration of ultra-wealthy in Australia, behind Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

But in only a couple of years, the city, located in Western Australia, will see its UHNW population outgrow Brisbane’s, according to the report.

Asia-pacific will be home to the largest number of ultra-high net worth individuals by 2032, according to a new report by Wealth-X.

Currently, wealth is concentrated in western economies – the US is home to 62,960 people with more than $30 million (€22.1 million), while 54,325 UHNW individuals live in Europe, compared to Asia-Pacific’s 42,525 super-rich.

However, Asia-Pacific’s UHNW population will surpass Europe’s by 2024 and the US’s by 2032, the study said.
