US President Joe Biden has put forward a proposal for a Billionaire Minimum Income Tax in his fiscal year 2023 budget proposal.

As part of the Biden administration’s bid to reduce the United States federal deficit, the proposed tax will “Eliminate the inefficient sheltering of income for decades or generations,” according to The White House.

While some financial commentators described the onset of the Covid pandemic in March 2020 as a so-called “Black Swan”—a one-off, rare and unpredictable event—it would appear that what we are dealing with is more of a migratory bird, a “Black Stork” if you like, whose movements recur with an element of (seasonal) regularity, at least until there is a circuit-breaker.

Huge, and necessary, rises in public spending have pushed government deficits to levels not seen since the two world wars of the 20th century.

Huge, and necessary, rises in public spending have pushed government deficits to levels not seen since the two world wars of the 20th century.

The numbers are enormous: UK government debt now tops £2 trillion (1). whilst the US owes an eye watering $26 trillion (2). The picture is similar across Europe with many other countries also seeing debt/GDP ratios rising to over 100% (3).

Richard Branson has offered his home, Necker Island, as security to the UK Government, in the hope of obtaining a £500 million loan to support Virgin Atlantic through the coronavirus crisis. Many business owners, and other individuals, around the UK will need to source funding at this time, but may be unable or unwilling to mortgage their home. They may therefore be looking at what other forms of collateral they might offer to lenders.

CK Hutchison Holdings patriarch to step aside

Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing, 88, has announced he will step down as the chairman of multinational conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings, which he founded more than 60 years ago.

Li turns 89 in July and said he was unlikely to resign before his 90th birthday. A story by MarketWatch named son and deputy president Victor Li as his likely successor. The younger Li has spent more than 30 years working under his father.
