Adult colouring book craze prompts growth at Faber-Castell

A surge in the number of people buying adult colouring books has caused double-digit growth at German writing instruments manufacturer Faber-Castell.

The eighth-generation family firm has been forced to run extra shifts in its factory to keep up with demand, Sandra Suppa from Faber-Castell told The Independent.

Adult colouring books have become a surprise success in bookshops and have sold some 16 million copies worldwide.

Tata Steel considers selling British plants

Tata Steel, one of the largest steelmakers in the world, is considering the sale of its entire UK business after heavy losses.

According to a company statement from the family-controlled conglomerate, the increase in Chinese imports, coupled with slow demand, has caused the price of steel in Europe to plunge by half since 2011.

In Asia, Tata, currently headed by family member and Indian business stalwart Ratan Tata, said its revenues for the year to March 2012 were $100.09 billion (€76.6 billion). The company saw a 20.1% rise in revenues to reach the $100 billion milestone for the first time.

Adi Godrej, chairman of India's family-controlled Godrej Group, said that a family member will succeed him whenever he decides to step down, according to India's The Economic Times.

At a conference, third-generation Godrej revealed that he expected someone from the family to succeed him and said that it could also be a woman.

The reporting season is upon us, and the news emerging from the world’s family-owned car makers is grim. BMW recently reported a full-year loss of €718 million, PSA PeugeotCitroen announced a net loss of €343 million while Ford reported a loss of $14.6 billion.

BMW recently reported a full-year loss before tax and interest of €718 million, much worse than the market had predicted. PSA PeugeotCitroen announced a net loss of €343 million and has been forced to accept a government bailout.

Ford reported a loss of $14.6 billion last year, the biggest in its 105-year history. Even Toyota is expected to announce its first net loss in six decades when it reports on its financial year ending 31st March.
