Retail giant Walmart, owned by the Walton family, announced on Monday its “combination” of its UK subsidiary Asda with rival chain Sainsbury’s to create the country’s largest grocer by market share.

Sir Ken Morrison, the life president and former chairman credited with transforming the eponymous family business into the UK's fourth largest food retailer, has died. He was 85-years-old.

His company hailed Sir Ken as “an inspirational leader” who led Morrisons to operate 375 stores and serve more nine million customers a week by his retirement in 2008.

The family behind US chain United Supermarkets has sold their business to a rival supermarket business, bringing 97 years of family ownership to a close.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday night, fourth-generation co-president Matt Bumstead said: "It’s hard for a family to keep their arms around an enterprise, a mission, as something grows over that many years."

Next-gen takes charge to expand supermarket family business

Family-owned supermarket chain Giant Eagle has appointed fourth-generation Laura Shapira Karet as chief executive, as the company looks to expand operations to more parts of the US.

Karet, who was so far the chief strategy officer and senior executive vice president, will be succeeding her father David Shapira to the role, who will step down to become executive chairman of the Pennsylvania-based grocery business.
