First-generation wealth still dominates fortunes in emerging markets, meaning that companies started by entrepreneurs in these regions haven’t yet established recognisable global brands.

These are among the main findings of a new study by Forbes Insights and Societe Generale Private Banking, which found the majority – 78% – of emerging-market fortunes were first-generation and came from entrepreneurial ventures. Only 20% of those surveyed had inherited their wealth.

Ultra-high net worth entrepreneurs will be offered wealth management and corporate and investment banking under a new service launched by Societe Generale.

The French bank is targeting wealthy entrepreneurs with family offices or holding companies with its new service, called Private Investment Banking.

Launched on 12 March, the service will include merger and acquisitions advisory and financing solutions such as initial public offerings, alongside traditional wealth management.

Switzerland may have renewed its reputation as a safe haven for investors in the last few years, but rich Asians are increasingly keeping their money in local financial institutions as the Alpine nation’s appeal as an offshore centre diminishes for these investors.

At a time when wealthy Europeans are pulling offshore accounts from Switzerland, the news that Asians are keeping more of their money at home looks set to further undermine Switzerland as an offshore financial centre.
