The Agnelli family that made its fortune in the Italian auto industry is expanding its interests in luxury goods with apparent overtures to Armani, only months after acquiring a quarter-stake in Christian Louboutin.

Agnelli scion John Elkann (pictured left), 45, the billionaire chairman and chief executive of Exor, the family-controlled holding company, has been in talks with fashion designer Giorgio Armani, Reuters reported.

Glasgow-based Arnold Clark, which is controlled by the founding Clark family, said on 28 September that its 2011 profits rose by 2.4% to £51.7 million (€64.7 million), compared to £50.5 million in 2010.

Crisis or no crisis, French family-controlled drinks-maker Remy Cointreau has reported annual revenues of more than €1 billion for the first time in its history, while luxury goods group Prada has seen net income for the first quarter shoot up by more than 100%.

Paris-based Remy Cointreau, behind brands such as Remy Martin cognac and Mount Gay rum, said preliminary sales for the year ending 31 March rose by 13% to €1.02 billion. It had a turnover of €907.8 million in the previous fiscal year.

Family-controlled Prada announced this week that it will create the outfits for both the athletes and the technical staff, as part of its sponsorship agreement with Federvela, the Italian sailing federation.
