Chanel has broken a century of silence over its financial results, revealing it brought in $9.6 billion in 2017.

The company, owned by the Wertheimer family, has long been suspected to rule the luxury brands, and its first results release confirmed this. Its nearest competitor, Gucci, turned over $7.2 billion in 2017.

Liliane Bettencourt, the heiress to the L’Oreal cosmetics fortune and the world’s richest woman, has died at home in Paris, aged 94.

Bettencourt, whose net worth was estimated at $39.5 billion, was the daughter of Eugène Schueller, who made a fortune as the inventor of modern hair dye and founder of L’Oreal.

Bettencourt was said to have adored her father, whose company she inherited on his death in 1957, her mother having died when she was five.

Richard Branson sells majority stake in Virgin Atlantic

Richard Branson is to loosen his grip on Virgin Atlantic, selling 31% of the company to Air France-KLM for $291 million(£220 million).

The billionaire, whose flamboyance is synonymous with the Virgin brand, would retain a 20% interest, with US carrier Delta controlling the remaining 49%.
