Antofagasta appoints Codelco veteran as new mining executive

Chilean firm Antofagasta, controlled by the Luksic family, has appointed a new chief executive to head its mineral unit.

The family-run firm said Ivan Arriagada Herrera, 51, would take up the appointment in Feburary. He currently works at state-owned competitor Codelco.

South Africa’s Massmart Holdings, a unit of Wal-Mart, is considering the buyout of one of several family-owned retailers in Kenya, as it tries to make inroads into the African nation.

According to Nairobi-based newspaper Business Daily, Naivas, Tuskys and Nakumatt, the family-owned businesses that dominate the sector, are the main targets for the food and household-goods retailer.

That’s according to a spokesman for the family business, who said plans to sell a stake to investors are at an early stage.
