Shin Young-ja, the chairwoman of the Lotte Scholarship Foundation, has been arrested over allegations she received bribes as prosecutors step up an investigation into the country’s fifth-largest business chaebol.

The 74-year-old daughter of Lotte founder Shin Kyuk-ho is accused of accepting bribes from the former chief of cosmetics brand Nature Republic in exchange for store space in Lotte’s duty-free outlets.

The third-generation CEO and chairman of Japanese family business Takata has had to confirm via the company that he will not be stepping down from the helm of the company in the midst of a product recall scandal.

The airbag maker is currently responsible for the largest auto recall in history, totaling 18 million vehicles since 2013 and attributed to at least 10 deaths.

The ageing billionaire has reportedly told staff at his British newspapers that a Labour-led government may lead to the break up of their employer, and told journalists to give more positive coverage to the Conservative Party, which hasn’t published a media ownership policy.

Family-owned companies with a family member as chief executive are among the worst managed, says a 2012 international study. Another, by British academics at Leeds and Aberdeen Business Schools, found that a company’s operating performance increased after a family chief executive left. Yet another found the stock prices of listed family-controlled businesses reacted favourably to the appointment of a non-family chief.
