Mormon businessman Bill Marriott, who transformed his father’s restaurant business into a global lodging company, has put aside the religious values of his church to launch a marketing campaign celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) inclusion. 

Mormon businessman Bill Marriott, who transformed his father’s restaurant business into a global lodging company, has put aside the religious values of his church to launch a marketing campaign celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) inclusion. 

Launched this month, the campaign, which features transgender model Geena Rocero and gay basketball player Jason Collins, includes a series of billboards and a dedicated website where customers are invited to share their travel stories on social media using the hashtag #LoveTravels.

A fourth-gen Italian pasta mogul has sparked controversy by saying his family business would never feature a gay family in its marketing campaigns, causing gay rights activists to call for a boycott of the brand.

Guido Barilla, chairman of the eponymous family business, told Italian radio station Radio 24: “I would never do [an advert] with a homosexual family, not for lack of respect but because we don’t agree with them. Ours is a classic family where the woman plays a fundamental role.”

Hotel chain Marriott International, owned by the eponymous Mormon family, has signed up as an official sponsor of the 2014 Gay Games in Ohio, US – despite the fact the family’s religion considers homosexual relations a sin.

Hotel chain Marriott International, owned by the eponymous Mormon family, has signed up as an official sponsor of the 2014 Gay Games in Ohio, US – despite the fact the family’s religion considers homosexual relations a sin.

The Renaissance Hotel in downtown Cleveland, part of the Marriott portfolio, will act as the host hotel throughout the event – due to take place next August.

The hotel chain has previously experienced a boycott from the LGBT community, due to its association with the Mormon religion.

Family-run hotel giant Marriott International has named Arne Sorenson as its next president and CEO according to US media reports.

Family-run hotel giant Marriott International has named Arne Sorenson as its next president and CEO according to US media reports. It is the first time the Bethesda, Maryland-based company has turned to non-family management.

The move is part of a wider initiative by CEO Bill Marriott (pictured), son of the company's founder, who is introducing modernisation and cost cutting initiatives to adapt to the more difficult economic climate.
