It’s been a week of big changes in family businesses, with Hermes announcing a new chief executive, Fiat Industrial proposing a merger with CNH and Bombardier hinting at a possible listing in New York. 

Fiat Industrial, controlled by the Italian Agnelli family, said on 30 May that it wanted to “simplify the existing shareholding structure”, merging with CNH and listing the new company in New York, with a secondary listing in Europe. Fiat Industrial is currently headquartered in Turin.

It’s been a good week for family businesses in North America and Europe, with Estee Lauder, Hyatt Hotels, Hermes and Asklepios Group seeing their revenues increase.

Cosmetic giant Estee Lauder said on 4 May that sales grew by 4% to $2.25 billion (€1.9 billion) during its third fiscal quarter, which ended on 31 March. Net profit at the New York-based company, controlled by the founding Lauder family, rose by 5% to $130.4 million, from $124.7 million during the same quarter last year.

Wendel, the French investment company controlled by the eponymous family, said on 22 March that revenues jumped 17.5% in 2011 to €5.95 billion, from €5.07 billion in 2010.

LVMH, the French luxury goods group controlled by the Arnault family, has further increased its stake in fellow family business Hermes and now controls 22.28% of the bag-maker’s shares and 16% of its voting rights.

LVMH, the French luxury goods group controlled by the Arnault family, has further increased its stake in fellow family business Hermes and now controls 22.28% of the bag-maker’s shares and 16% of its voting rights.

According to a filing with France’s stock market regulator Autorite des Marches Financiers, the Paris-based luxury group raised its stake in Hermes to 23,518,942 shares on 15 December.

Organised by Walpole, the non-profit lobby group for the British luxury sector, the awards ceremony saw five of the 10 awards going to family businesses.

The Paris-based luxury goods company today (4 November) forecasted revenue increases of between 15% and 16% at constant rates of exchange this year, up from the 12% to 14% it predicted in August.

The family behind Hermes is allowed to create a holding company, aimed at warding off takeover attempts by rival luxury group LVMH, a French court ruled today (15 September).

The family behind Hermes is allowed to create a holding company, aimed at warding off takeover attempts by rival luxury group LVMH, a French court ruled today (15 September).

In Paris, the court of appeal upheld an earlier exemption given by French stock market watchdog AMF that granted the family permission to create the holding company without having to buy out other shareholders.
