US regulators side with Boeing in Bombardier row

Family-controlled Bombardier has called a proposed import duty on its new US fleet “absurd and divorced from reality”, in the latest chapter of its spat with American rival Boeing.

The US Commerce Department this week sided with Boeing in the dispute, proposing punitive tariffs of up to 219% on Bombardier’s C-Series jet, which Boeing claims is being sold in the US below cost thanks to subsidies and bailouts from the Quebec, Canadian and UK governments.

James Dyson engineers new university

Sir James Dyson, founder of the eponymous British technology company, is to open his own institute to train engineers as part of a drive to ensure UK companies remain competitive.

The Dyson Institute of Technology, opening this autumn, will offer students free education and a guaranteed job on completion. Dyson said the starting salary was expected to be about £15,000 ($18,700) in the first year.

German family business Bosch, one of Europe’s largest companies by revenues, has been accused of stealing secret technology from a UK rival, but has denied the allegations.

British appliance group Dyson has filed legal proceedings, claiming Bosch – a manufacturing and engineering firm – placed a mole in its company, who has allegedly been passing on secrets to Bosch for up to two years.
