US regulators side with Boeing in Bombardier row

Family-controlled Bombardier has called a proposed import duty on its new US fleet “absurd and divorced from reality”, in the latest chapter of its spat with American rival Boeing.

The US Commerce Department this week sided with Boeing in the dispute, proposing punitive tariffs of up to 219% on Bombardier’s C-Series jet, which Boeing claims is being sold in the US below cost thanks to subsidies and bailouts from the Quebec, Canadian and UK governments.

Dyson profits up 41% on Asia surge

Profits at British technology company Dyson have increased by 41% following increased sales of vacuum cleaners, air purifiers and hairdryers in Asia.

The Wiltshire-based family business tripled its revenue in china, Indonesia and the Philippines in 2016. The region accounted for more than half of Dyson’s sales and profit.

James Dyson engineers new university

Sir James Dyson, founder of the eponymous British technology company, is to open his own institute to train engineers as part of a drive to ensure UK companies remain competitive.

The Dyson Institute of Technology, opening this autumn, will offer students free education and a guaranteed job on completion. Dyson said the starting salary was expected to be about £15,000 ($18,700) in the first year.

Hyundai Motor vows to improve corporate governance

South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co will consider a shareholder request to improve corporate governance, according to co-chief executive Kim Choong Ho.

The proposal comes shortly after Hyundai paid more than $10 billion for a piece of real estate in Seoul’s affluent Gangnam district, which caused share prices to drop and rekindled the debate around opaque decision making.
