Fifth generation members of the Cooper brewing dynasty were urged to forge their own careers by their fourth-gen father when their Australian family business was struggling to survive in the 1970s.

Melanie Cooper (pictured), 58, finance director at Coopers Brewery and chairwoman of the Coopers Brewery Foundation, said entering the family business was something she and her brother Tim Cooper (pictured), 63, now managing director, aimed for when growing up.

“We grew up opposite the brewery,” Melanie told CampdenFB.

Australia’s leading family of brewers has restructured its senior management to enable the fifth generation to transfer from commercial to custodial roles while the upcoming sixth generation learns the business.

Coopers Brewery said the organisational restructure was designed to provide additional support for Dr Tim Cooper (pictured), fifth-generation managing director, and to provide a more effective and efficient engagement with customers. The changes included the appointment of a general manager and the recruitment of a national marketing manager.

Coopers Brewery, which was last year voted the top international family business by CampdenFB readers, has claimed another award.

The Adelaide-based brewer, known for its pale and sparkling ales, was named Distinguished Family Business of The Year 2012 at an awards ceremony hosted by Family Business Australia at the weekend.

The family behind US oil company Downeast Energy has sold the firm, while Coopers Brewery, the Australian beer maker controlled by the eponymous family, has expanded into the American market with a big acquisition.

Owned by the Morell family, Maine-based Downeast Energy, whose operations span oil to propane and building materials, has been sold to Oklahoma’s NGL Energy Partners, according to a statement by the latter. No financial terms of the transaction were disclosed.
