US regulators side with Boeing in Bombardier row

Family-controlled Bombardier has called a proposed import duty on its new US fleet “absurd and divorced from reality”, in the latest chapter of its spat with American rival Boeing.

The US Commerce Department this week sided with Boeing in the dispute, proposing punitive tariffs of up to 219% on Bombardier’s C-Series jet, which Boeing claims is being sold in the US below cost thanks to subsidies and bailouts from the Quebec, Canadian and UK governments.

Richard Branson sells majority stake in Virgin Atlantic

Richard Branson is to loosen his grip on Virgin Atlantic, selling 31% of the company to Air France-KLM for $291 million(£220 million).

The billionaire, whose flamboyance is synonymous with the Virgin brand, would retain a 20% interest, with US carrier Delta controlling the remaining 49%.

The third-gen vice president of Korean Air has resigned after she delayed one of its flights because an air steward served her macadamia nuts in a bag, rather than on a plate.

Heather Cho, 40, is the eldest daughter of Cho Yang Ho, who is chairman of the airline, and its parent company Hanjin Group.

In a flight from New York on 5 December, Cho berated a junior steward for the way he had presented the nuts, and insisted the plane taxi back the terminal so he could be removed from the flight.

Two family business dynasties have come together to form a new airline in South America in a move designed to take advantage of the growing demand for air travel in the region.  
 
The Cueto family, who own around 34% of LAN of Chile, and the Amaro family, who have a similar holding in Tam of Brazil, will together control around 38% of the new airline, called Latam Airline Group, making them the group's largest shareholders. The Cueto family will have the largest stake of the new airline, at 24%.
