Walmart gets in the Christmas spirit

Walmart is best known for its giant stores, the fortune it made its founding family and its sometimes questionable employee practices, but as Christmas approaches, the family business has shown a different side.

Walmart is best known for its giant stores, the fortune it made its founding family and its sometimes questionable employee practices, but as Christmas approaches, the family business has shown a different side.

The company has organised a 12 Days of Giving campaign on Facebook, where it will donate $1.5 million (€1.15 million) to 145 organisations across the US.

On the 9th day (20 December), Walmart awarded $90,000 to nine non-profits providing assistance to communities affected by “times of hardship and adversity”. They were nominated by people who had benefited from the services provided by the organisations, said Walmart.

“These individuals might not have the financial resources of their own to support the non-profit that helped them, but through this campaign, found a passionate way to give back," added Julie Gehrki, senior director at the Walmart Foundation, in a statement.

As well as the Facebook campaign, the Walmart Foundation will also give away more than $17.5 million over the holiday season.
