A technology company walked off with the prize for Family Business of the Year at PwC's UK Private Business of the Year Awards last night.

Midlands-based Rigby Group is one of Europe's largest IT companies, with more than 6000 employees worldwide and reported revenues of €2.7 billion in 2012.

Current chairman and chief executive Sir Peter Rigby founded the company in 1975 and his two sons Steven and James Rigby both hold director's roles.

The company now has divisions in hotels, property, investments and aviation – owning two UK airports and a helicopter operator.

PwC said it set up the event to celebrate the UK's private business sector.

Rigby was up against van manufacturer Allied Vehicles, Oakland Farm Eggs, medical equipment manufacturer Owen Mumford and construction company Wates Group.

It said it awarded Rigby the prize because of its foresight at dealing with succession – a constant issue for family business – and its success in securing the loyalty of its senior managers.

Guest Speaker, the chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne, said: "I am proud to celebrate the amazing contribution of these firms, and I congratulate all those nominated for an award."
