Murdoch plays it safe with new appointment
Rupert Murdoch has unveiled News Corporation veteran Chase Carey as his new right hand man. Carey replaces Peter Chernin, described as being "a trusted friend" by Murdoch, who leaves on 1 July.
Carey, who spent 15 years as a senior executive at News Corp before becoming CEO of The DIRECTV Group in 2003, becomes deputy chairman, president and COO. Reporting to Murdoch, he will have an oversight of the group's global operations and join the board of directors.
In choosing Carey, Murdoch has again selected a man he can trust. "Chase has been one of my closest advisors and friends for years and I am delighted we'll once again be working together across our businesses as we face the challenges and great opportunities ahead," said Murdoch.
A contributing factor to Chernin's departure was thought to be his frustration that he would never replace Murdoch at the head of the $31 billion business, given the latter's stated desire to see one his children take over the business.
In addition to his undoubted industry experience, the choice of Carey, 55, can be viewed as a safe appointment. He is someone who knows and accepts the status quo and will not rock the family succession boat.
"News Corp's growth opportunities are second to none and I am thrilled to be returning at such a transformative time for our businesses across the globe," said Carey.
