Marriott left reeling after new bomb attack
Bill Marriott (pictured), chairman and CEO of Marriott International, has sent his sympathies to the victims of the bomb attacks that took place in two of the family-owned company's hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Eight people have so far died and at least 51 have been injured in the two blasts that tore through the Ritz Carlton and the JW Marriott Hotels yesterday. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack but according to local media reports the bombings are similar to those previously carried out by the militant group Jemaah Islamiyah.
On his blog on the company website, Marriott said: "Our deepest sympathies go out to the victims of the tragic bombings that took place earlier today in Jakarta." He went on to add: "At the time of the incident, extensive security procedures were in place at the Ritz-Carlton and the JW Marriott."
This is the second time in less than a year a Marriott hotel has been targeted by terrorism. In September 2008 a suicide bomber killed 53 people and injured more than 250 when a truck blew up at the checkpoint of a Marriott hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan.
